Acne: The horror of the four letter word

Acne vulgaris

Acne! Zits! Pimples!

These words equals horror on sight and disaster on date! NO one deserves to get them but unfortunately, this is the natural cycle that most teenagers and even young adults go through.

You know that cute little toy up there? It's the bacteria causing acne. Not so cute anymore right?

So what are pimples and how exactly do you get them?

First up; Lets talk about the natural state of our face.

Our face, no matter how different they are, have one thing in common-Hair. It might not seem like we have any hair on our face but if you look close enough, you can spot many fine tiny hairs on them. These hairs, will probably not bother you on normal days, but however, during puberty these hair follicles are the one that causes you to have pimples.

So how does it happen?

During puberty, our hormone causes an increase in secretion of sebum or oil and these materials will be secreted out through the hair follicles. These excess sebum causes the pores holding the hair follicles to get clogged up and if left there for a long period, it could get congested causing whitehead. This whitehead could later turn into blackhead when it is oxidized. These whiteheads or blackheads could become infected by bacteria and become inflamed, pain and red. This will then be called acne.

Strangely, even though acne are mostly associated with girls, many guys experience these problems too.  I believe however that they are less vocal about their feelings and thus creating an image that guys do not normally get acne as compared to girls. Sorry girls, but you're wrong about that. Guys do indeed get pimples and it is usually more frequent as compared to girls!

Why? The reason is largely due to the male hormones, testosterone. Testosterone causes increase in secretion of sebum and thus guys are more likely to get clogged pores as compared to girls.

So why does it hurts so much when you have pimples?

The reason for the pimples to hurt is largely because it becomes inflamed. As our skin are filled with many types of receptors and in this case the pain receptor, it causes the acne and the skin surrounding the acne to hurt.

So with that, I end my introduction to acne. I hope it answer some question for you. Do email or leave a comment on the chatbox if you want to know more. :)
